Post-Apocalypse Part I: Berlin

To write about a trip to Eastern Europe is daunting.  So I’ll split my memories into two blogs.  This one is dedicated to Berlin, centered on the memorials.  I was struck by Professor James E. Young’s comment from his brilliant talk “Landscape of Memory" (available on youtube.com).  Speaking of Holocaust memorials, he said,  “in each of these places [archives and museums of the world], I found a very different Holocaust.”  He continues, “memorials and museums shape the Holocaust in different ways.”  This was the essence of what I discovered and it revealed a lot about how each country is coming to terms (or is not) with the Holocaust. My relationship with Germany has not been very informed or intimate over the years.  However, as Harry's and my thirtieth wedding anniversary approached, we were looking for a special place. My father-in-law’s vote for Berlin as “most fascinating city” was seconded by my...

A Musical Interlude

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue... and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” E.Y. Harburg Yip Harburg’s lyrics opened our original first chapter of Jewish Luck (subsequently deleted). The flute music from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" also opened the marriage ceremony of Vera’s son and daughter-in-law on Grand Cayman.  The words to that melody captured the poignancy of just how far Vera and Alla had come since their childhoods in Cold War Leningrad. Indeed, this sixth wedding of the book (if you’re counting) on Twelve Mile Beach was symbolic of the life of opportunity for the children of both women and the dreams that their mothers “dared to dream.” Fast forward to the 2014 Academy Awards when Pink sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the 1939 release of “Wizard of Oz.” Jewish social media tweeted, buzzed and blogged about Pink’s...

Dealing with Evil: Preparation for Yom HaShoah, Day of Remembrance

Jewish Luck Blog
The petite 13 year-old Catholic girl told me she wasn’t able to fall asleep now that she was reading Elie Wiesel’s Night.  She would finish it though because she needed to know how it ended.  Curiosity and revulsion.  I remember. It brought back to me my loss of innocence when I saw the films of the concentration camps just after Liberation in Hebrew school.  My mind couldn’t take in that it was documentary footage.  Until then I didn’t know about the existence of evil.  -“I understand how you feel,” I told this pensive dark-haired girl.  I am going to Eastern Europe where I will be visiting some camps.” She looked aghast.  “Will you have to stay overnight?” I remembered thinking the same thing when I heard about people visiting. -“No, we’ll just be visiting for the day” -“Why are you going?” I told her I wasn’t sure. Later the words “to...

1504Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking: A Memoir of Food and Longing by Anya Von Bremzen. Crown Publishers: NY 2013. Let’s begin with a few basic facts.
 1. While we have grocery stores in the US, citizens in the Former Soviet Union have for decades waited in endless lines trying to “procure” food.
 2. As Anya Von Bremzen states, “Inevitably, a story about Soviet food is a chronicle of longing, of unrequited desire.” (p.2) Since we just completed two Passover seders, I must pose the question -- why is Anya Von Bremzen’s memoir different than all previous memoirs? Other writers may be eloquent or witty, but this author is both. I love the comparison of her Mom’s dream life to black and white movies from Stalinist times “sleek cold war thrillers laced with KGB spooks; melodramas starring duty-crushed lovers.” Second, because this is a shared memoir of Anya and her 79...

The Passover Seder and Integration of Memory

Leslie
Friday, 27 March 2015
Jewish Luck Blog
Passover is a time when Jews gather together at a seder and read from the Haggada the narrative of our journey with the instruction that we should feel as if we personally were freed from Egypt.  This ritual serves to integrate our past to our present and one generation to another.  In my day job as a psychologist, while I was preparing for this week’s consultation on EMDR (a trauma therapy), I discovered a chapter entitled “Narrative” in Dan Siegel’s Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology that opened my eyes that the seder is an ideal ritual to heal trauma and further integrate a group.  Siegel was writing about trauma in general, not our enslavement in Egypt nor Yom haShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), but the connections are clear. By narrating our story and subjecting it to further interpretation, we change the nature of our memories on a neurochemical level from bits of sensory data to a fuller, more integrated story. ...

Jewish on the Down Low
I snapped up the invitation to speak at a zoom meeting for the Jewish Affinity Group from Columbus School for Girls. Self-quarantining for almost a year has made me hungry to talk about Jewish Luck. It's certainly clear from the news that Vera and Alla's perceptions about the "New" Russia are just as relevant now as they were when Vera first encountered Putin in Leningrad.More than the intellectua...

Talk Review

"I was very fortunate to be able to hear Meryll and Leslie speak at a Hadassah event in Israel. Each of the ~50 participants really enjoyed the event because Meryll and Leslie were so engaging. While they had a natural rapport with the audience, you could also tell they had prepared well so they could connect with our particular group's interests. I learned a lot from listening to them, and I found their sisterly interaction unique and fun. If you want an enlightening and uplifting experience, attend one of their book talks."

Book Review

"Truly, you have written a story that makes accessible the reality of existence in Russia, through the eyes of individuals who lived through the various regimes and dictates.  It is fascinating and very well told.  As I read Vera and Alla's story, I learned more Russian history than I had known from a textbook.  That's a big deal, women!  You tell the tale with vivid detail and hook us on the two women and their stories, then weave in the history to illuminate their journeys. It is such a necessary book.  I am thrilled that the two of you collaborated, as I can see the uniqueness of your personalities come through in the stories, and that, too, makes the book a gem."
