kitchen boyNo, not our book, but The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander aka RD Zimmerman!  For those of you who have not read our nonfiction book, Jewish Luck, our story would not be complete without RD Zimmerman or Lars Peterssen who can be credited with creating some of the real luck that benefitted Vera.  The film of The Kitchen Boy is directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky of The Counterfeiters fame and will star Kristin Scott Thomas.  Looks like an Oscar possibility based on screenwriters, cast and director. Check this slow link for the full story.  Who knew we would ever be linking to the Hollywood Reporter?  Karma is complete for RD, as Vera and Alexei have invested in the project.  Our best wishes to RD.  Speaking of best wishes, RD and Lars are approaching the first anniversary of their marriage after 34 years of partnership.  Their marriage was a special story as it occurred on the...

Nadezhda Means Hope

Les20and20Volodya27s20mom Nadezhda Simonovna has long deserved her own column.  Of all the people with whom I reunited in Russia after thirty-four years, she was the one I would have recognized anywhere.  Nadezhda Simonovna is the mother of my friend Volodya. After a thirty plus year hiatus in communication, I had contacted Volodya about two weeks before our 2011 arrival in St. Petersburg to ask if he wanted to meet for coffee with Meryll and me.  Russians don’t seem to meet for coffee.  If I base all my observations on Volodya, they also want to meet you at the airport, drive you to historic places through god-awful traffic and take you home to a multi-course feast afterwards before asking when they can see you next. Coffee?  Hardly.  Volodya asked for our travel details and called the moment we arrived in St. Petersburg to plan our meeting.  The first destination would be to...

My Superpower

Leslie
Sunday, 22 June 2014
Jewish Luck Blog
140622Magical realism is nothing new for me.  When you’ve spent your childhood watching “Bewitched,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” and “My Favorite Martian,” you assume you have special powers; or, at least, you might befriend an alien or genie who will grant wishes on your behalf.  I’m glad to report that I have finally found my superpower – blogging. However as Spiderman’s uncle said, “With great power comes great responsibility.”  I can use my superpower for vengeance or good.  For example, I could use blogging to repeat absurd statements that irritate me.  But I shall not be petty. I really, really want to be petty, but my husband, Harry, and my sister advised me it’s an abuse of a superpower. Because I blog, I can change the world, at least, in a minuscule way.  Words are appearing in the spaces in front of me as I push down the keys.  I know...

The Driver/Pedestrian Problem

Leslie
Sunday, 15 June 2014
Jewish Luck Blog
I have been thinking about the “driver/pedestrian problem” for about ten years now.  Most likely, you've never heard about this issue because I think I coined the phrase.  Consider this paradox:  although we are frequently in both roles as driver and pedestrian, when we are in one position, e.g. driver, it seems almost impossible to have much empathy toward the individual in the other position, e.g. pedestrian.  We are all in both positions regularly.  Okay, maybe this isn’t a problem for you, but it is for me. This was not a problem my father had. He was aware of both the father and son roles he occupied.  He was also aware that he was both handicapped by his hearing loss, and privileged as head of a company with the help of family connections.  As a boss, he passed through the factory daily, identifying with the workers and their role as caretakers...

From Minne Apple to Big Apple

Leslie
Sunday, 01 June 2014
Jewish Luck Blog
Most Minneapolitans planning a trip to the Big Apple prepare their list of museums and shows.  Meryll and I set out on our trip to NYC this week to survive two minutes – two minutes to present three and a half years of work.  Sitting with 49 other nervous authors flipping through notes, we faced an audience of 200 representatives searching for the authors who would attract crowds to their Jewish book fairs.  At the Jewish Book Network, more than 200 authors presented over three days. What was I thinking during this event?  1. I’m glad I married Harry Adler.  Speeches were in alphabetical order, so after the first few minutes, we could sit back and enjoy the show. 2.  Being a Jewish author is not so special.  Lots of Jews write books. 3.  There are a lot of great books by Jewish authors. 4.  What am I doing here? What...

Jewish on the Down Low
I snapped up the invitation to speak at a zoom meeting for the Jewish Affinity Group from Columbus School for Girls. Self-quarantining for almost a year has made me hungry to talk about Jewish Luck. It's certainly clear from the news that Vera and Alla's perceptions about the "New" Russia are just as relevant now as they were when Vera first encountered Putin in Leningrad.More than the intellectua...

American Kompromat
What I learned from American Kompromat by Craig Unger (2021) Dutton: NYC has prompted me to write a blog. Trigger Warning: This book contains potentially distressing content that could trigger trauma that we have experienced regarding the previous US President. I whisper this mantra to myself: "We're safe now. He's gone. We're safe now." The purpose of this exercise is to reduce my blood pre...

Talk Review

"I was very fortunate to be able to hear Meryll and Leslie speak at a Hadassah event in Israel. Each of the ~50 participants really enjoyed the event because Meryll and Leslie were so engaging. While they had a natural rapport with the audience, you could also tell they had prepared well so they could connect with our particular group's interests. I learned a lot from listening to them, and I found their sisterly interaction unique and fun. If you want an enlightening and uplifting experience, attend one of their book talks."

Book Review

"Truly, you have written a story that makes accessible the reality of existence in Russia, through the eyes of individuals who lived through the various regimes and dictates.  It is fascinating and very well told.  As I read Vera and Alla's story, I learned more Russian history than I had known from a textbook.  That's a big deal, women!  You tell the tale with vivid detail and hook us on the two women and their stories, then weave in the history to illuminate their journeys. It is such a necessary book.  I am thrilled that the two of you collaborated, as I can see the uniqueness of your personalities come through in the stories, and that, too, makes the book a gem."
